Reviews
D.M. Hall Centenary Competition Press Release, Wednesday 5 March 1997:
"Wendy's paintings evoke the landscape sources upon which all of her work
draws. While almost monochromatic, it is rich in colour, subtly composed and
sensitively painted." Kirkland Main
The Herald - Review for the "Visions of Six" Exhibition, August 1996
"Wendy Sutherland, winner of the third year students' Queens Anniversary
Award, presents powerful, dark pieces - enveloping, claustrophobic darknesses
split by slits of light, echoes of her native Northern forests." Sally
Kerr
The Scotsman - Review for the Edinburgh College of Art Degree Show, June 1997
"Wendy Sutherland paints in a way that is reminiscent of William
Johnstone's great abstract landscapes." Duncan Macmillan
The Scotsman Review for the Edinburgh College of Art Degree Show, June 1998
"Wendy Sutherland is a powerful free abstract painter." Duncan
Macmillan
Artist's Statement
The Highland landscape is for me a poetic subject. My memories are an important
source for my work, however it is when these impressions are translated through
the language of paint and other mixed media that I feel that my images become
some thing more than traditional Scottish landscape painting. The process by
which these images are made is very important to me. The process ranges from
physically throwing paint and pigment onto the canvas to delicately drawing and
rendering images. Although the figure is abandoned my work I consider it to be
very much about a human relationship to the landscape.
