ETHEL WALKER
|
Ethel Walker's painting is rooted in the Scottish landscape tradition. Like Joan Eardley, she delights in capturing the raw wildness of wind-whipped seas and moody glens (though with an emphasis on the westcoast) or the power of light and sun penetrating heavy cloud. By contrast, she offers the tranquillity of still life studies ranging from spring-like to stately, together with a new theme - that of her lily pond.
Calligraphic in their execution, these oils pair interestingly with the Japanese brush calligraphy of Campbell Sandilands, whose broadening talents embrace paintings on silk, ceramic wall pieces and his newest woodblock prints. One of the final shows in the year-long Japan 2001 Festival, these works are loosely based on Kobo Abe's 'Suna no Onna' (Woman of the Dunes) and come to Stenton via the print gallery at Dundee Contemporary Arts.
