Statement
'Seeing,
observing and interpreting are the starting points of my work.
The
finished work lies at the extremes of, and mostly between, the two polarities
of the figurative (the real) and the abstract (the unseen).
The
figurative is reflected in paintings in which information is recorded
in one time portraying actual buildings and their environment - an encapsulation
of a moment of time. Such paintings explore the mathematics, tempo and
movement within and around structures and explore the relationship between
man and the built environment. This is an attempt to induce a reminiscent
response in the viewer.
The
other polarity, the 'unseen', falls into abstraction influenced and inspired
by landscape and events, feelings and emotions. This work tends to focus
on texture and pattern, on strata and rhythm trying to induce an emotional
response in the viewer. This more abstract work, by manipulating time,
gives the freedom to play with size and scale and it is possible that
elements and objects only truly begin to be seen, observed and understood
in such a context.'
