Whereas Campbell
Sandilands's two previous solo shows at Stenton were based on American Indian
and African Bushman culture, his latest exhibition has its origins much closer
to home.
The result of a three-month art residency in Pittencrieff Park, Dunfermline
during summer 2003, the works are loosely based around the four elements of
Earth, Air, Fire and Water. The artworks take many forms, from woodblock
printing in its most beautiful intricacy, through collaged versions with
contrasts of bold and subtle, through mixed-media pieces for floor and wall, to
strong calligraphic works on silk, in many cases pushing the frontiers of the
technique in Sandilands's own intuitive and spiritual way.
The artist was readily inspired by his surroundings, and is sensitive to man's
interaction with nature. He would like us to share in that, to take time to
reflect on the human condition and perhaps to understand better the influences
affecting our own physical and mental states. From the more open area of the
gallery, you are invited to spend time in a sanctuary area which aids the inner
journey, in a restorative process.
By pointing up some of life's 'universals', Sandilands has created an
exhibition which gives cause for contemplation and an impetus to reflect on our
own life's journey at the onset of a new year. |
