Stenton Gallery
Sam MacDonald

The works on show are a mix of plaster and metal pieces - studies of fish and bones in metal including indigenous trout, salmon and sticklebacks. More exotic sea fish include permit, hatchet fish, sandeels and a herring shoal.

Artist's statement: I use the old traditional metalwork techniques to produce contemporary and unique pieces. My artistic endeavour is to observe and to capture fleeting moments of nature, from the calm and tension before a trout strikes to the pure excitement of a mass shoal's sudden turn. I try to express the emotional response to something very private, a moment shared between man and nature, suggesting a balance and a suspension; the brooding colours of the background saturate the work with a contemplative stillness.
