'Oya-ko', literally translated, means 'parent/child'. In
the case of the present exhibition, it is used by extension to describe the
similar relationship between a master and his apprentice, a teacher and his
student.
For the four years that he studied under Shingai Tanaka in Japan, Campbell
Sandilands absorbed a fund of knowledge about the ancient calligraphic
tradition. On their subsequent separate paths, both artists have continued to
explore the possibilities of the medium, applying their skills not only to the
established principles but uniquely and individually advancing their art in a
contemporary context.
Boundaries have been extended as Shingai's work embraced the avant-garde and
Campbell further exploited his expertise in woodblock printing and ceramics,
utilising materials other than paper.
This exhibition reunites the two men in a western context and provides an
opportunity to appreciate the range of their work. Stenton Gallery is proud to
bring them to Edinburgh for Japan 2001.
