Ruth Brownlee: Blustery North Sea, mixed
media on board, 25 x 56 cm
One year on, Ruth Brownlee
returns for her second solo show with us, having captivated visitors with her
expressive scenes of Shetland. People find a resonance, it seems, with Ruth's
feelings for her surroundings.
Perhaps because of her
interest in tapestry as a student, Ruth's first aim now in painting is to
create surface texture. This she does with a variety of media before applying
colour of any kind. With a three-dimensional impression on the board before
her, she only then begins the composition and colour processes. With broad
brushes and card, the paint is applied - and frequently removed. Her aim in
working into the painting is to capture the essence of a scene - the elemental
force and the naturalness of light - in an artistic language that is hers
alone.
Moira Maitland RSW studied
and graduated from Gray's School of Art in Aberdeen, in 1956. She has come to
our attention belatedly, following an Edinburgh Festival show that was cool,
contemporary and chic. Some of Moira's still lifes will be on show at Stenton,
together with a group of semi-abstract landscapes.
